Take 20 motorcycle travellers from nine countries, experienced and novice, and ask them to write about travelling the world’s largest and most diverse continent: to share a moment from those travels which became priceless. A moment that had them thinking, ‘Yes! This is exactly why I’m out here!’
Connected by motorcycles and an insatiable curiosity, the Moment Collectors take you from the heat of the central Asian steppes to the snow-topped mountains of Nepal, from backroads India to riding the history of Korea, and from the forests of Burma to the extremes of eastern Siberia.
Some of the Moment Collectors ride two up, some ride in pairs, and there are solo riders too. Their chapters are illustrated by over 70 drawings and paintings, plus 20 photographs.

Fern Hume – “A country girl at heart, I know when I’ve spent too much time in the city. I yearned for fresh wind in my veiled hair, to go and seek out desert, mountains and camels. I’ve ridden many a time through the streets of London, which can be done in a savvy way. Tabriz, however, is like sticky treacle. You move at a snail’s pace, with the bitumen soft under the relentless heat. Everyone thinks that by honking their horns they will miraculously move forward. The sounds are loud, impatient, and frustrated. A heat haze shimmered above the queue ahead of me.”
Chris Donaldson – “If you can give me $20 for forgiveness of all your sins, that would be fine,” he said. “For all of them?!” This seemed like a bargain to me: $20 for complete absolution. I was sure my Protestant vicar at home wouldn’t do a deal like that. “But do I get a refund if it doesn’t work?”
Maria Schumacher – “The air is crisp, and we soak up the views of snow-capped mountains and white stupas against the rocky grey desert. The asphalt gives way to unpredictable potholes and shallow sandpits, but on our little light bikes it’s a lot of fun. Yellow aspen line the valleys…”
